Identity is “Repeated Beingness”

Hello my friend,

In the world of personal development, we often treat “identity” as a fixed destination—a badge we earn once we’ve finally “made it.” We wait until we lose the weight to call ourselves an athlete, or until we finish the book to call ourselves a writer.

But the most powerful shift you can make is realizing that identity isn’t a trophy; it’s a practice.

The Key Insight: Identity is “Repeated Beingness”

The word identity actually finds its roots in the Latin words identidem (over and over) and entitas (being). Quite literally, your identity is your repeated beingness.

This means you don’t “find” yourself; you enact yourself through the small, repetitive choices you make every single day.

Why This Matters

When we view identity as a static trait, we feel like imposters when we fail. But when we view it as repeated beingness, every moment becomes a fresh opportunity to cast a vote for the person we want to become.

  • The Old Way: “I’m not a runner because I’m out of shape.”
  • The New Way: “I am a runner every time I lace up my shoes, regardless of my pace.”

Your identity is simply the lag time between your actions and your self-perception. If you want to change who you are, stop looking for a “new you” in the mirror and start looking for it in your rhythm.

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.” — James Clear

3 Ways to Practice “Repeated Beingness” Today

  1. Lower the Bar: If you want to be a “focused person,” don’t aim for four hours of deep work. Aim for five minutes of “beingness” where your phone is in another room.
  2. Focus on the Verb: Instead of obsessing over being a “Success” (the noun), focus on “Succeeding” (the verb) in this one specific task.
  3. Audit Your Reps: Look at your last 24 hours. What version of yourself have you been “repeating”? If you don’t like the identity those reps are creating, simply change the next rep.

QUOTE FOR YOU

"Your identity is not a solid stone; it is a river. It is formed not by where you stand, but by the direction you choose to flow, over and over again."

JOURNAL PROMPT FOR YOU

If you were to strip away all your current results (your bank account, your job title, your fitness level), what is one verb or quality you want to embody? (e.g., To be a person who creates, to be a person who listens, to be a person who moves).
