Why your mental health matters more than you think (a quick reflection)

Hey Reader,

I wanted to speak straight from the heart today. No script, no glossy polish—just pulling together a few raw thoughts on something that’s been heavy on my mind lately: mental health and why taking care of it is so much deeper than most people realize.

At its core, mental health isn't just an abstract phrase. It’s simply how you think, feel, and act.

And how you think, feel, and act dictates how you show up in this world. It shapes who you are, the quality of the relationships you build, and ultimately, how you live your entire life. It’s right up there with the fundamental cornerstones of being a great human—eating well, moving your body, sleeping, and keeping your mind right. When more of us take care of those basics, more of us can show up as the best versions of ourselves for the people who need us.

The Things We Don't See

We all hear the cliches, but it remains true: you truly never know what someone is going through.

Most people don’t walk around broadcasting their darkest moments or hardest days. Nobody walks up to a casual acquaintance at the coffee shop and says, "Hey, how's it going? I lost someone yesterday." Nobody even knows how to respond to that. I’m not saying you have to dump your heaviest trauma on random strangers, but we need a lot more open space in our culture to express the really hard stuff when we're struggling.

Awareness months—like Mental Health Awareness Month or Suicide Prevention Month—are great for putting a spotlight on these topics for people who don't normally think about them. But honestly? This is work we need to be doing all year round.

We're dealing with the actual lives of real human beings here. Suicide is complex, deeply painful, and driven by immense weight. (And to be completely clear: suicide is not a selfish act, and I'll never tolerate people labeling it as such).

When we dare to talk openly about these scary, heavy subjects, we break down walls. It allows us to connect with each other on a genuine level and build the kind of deep, meaningful relationships that make life worth living.

Why This Work Matters to Me

If you're wondering why I'm so relentlessly passionate about this, it all stems back to losing someone I loved deeply—my big sister.

She was someone who cared for me and showed me more love than I ever deserved. She was the best sister anyone could ask for, and losing her completely shifted my perspective on life. She is the driving force behind everything I do today.

Every single day, I try to honor her legacy by being a steward of this conversation, by striving to be the best husband and father I can possibly be, and by being of service to others who might be hurting in the dark.

Take Care of Yourself Today

If you’re carrying a heavy load right now, please know that you don't have to carry it in complete isolation. Check in on your friends, hold space for the people you love, and don't be afraid to take care of your own mind and heart.

The cornerstone of a great life is great health and great relationships. Everything else comes second.

Sending you all the strength today,

Hey Reader, I was having a conversation recently with a former Major League Baseball player, and predictably, the topic of identity came up. If you’ve ever talked to an athlete who hung up their jersey for the last time, you know how hard that shift is. Their whole life, they were "the baseball player" or "the runner" or "the fighter." Once the sport ends, they step into this massive, terrifying black hole where they’re forced to ask: If I don’t play anymore, who the hell am I? Here’s the...

Hey Reader, True self-respect isn't built on warm feelings or high energy. It is forged in the quiet, unglamorous moments when the initial spark is completely gone, but you show up and do the work anyway. When you set a goal, make a promise, or state an intention, you are usually operating from a peak emotional state. You feel inspired, clear, and capable. But motivation is an emotion, and like all emotions, it passes. The moment you rely on "feeling like it" to take action, you hand control...

Hey Reader, Society loves clean, simple labels. When confronted with something as heavy and terrifying as suicide, we tend to lean on convenient shortcuts: we call it selfish, cowardly, or point an accusing finger at someone in deep distress, asking, "How could they do that to the people who love them?" If you’ve ever sat in the dark wrestling with suicidal ideation, or if you’ve loved someone who has, you already know a painful truth: the public narrative couldn’t be further from what is...
